Waverly Drive is a solo project from the Chicago/LA-based creative Phil Galloni, whose work has crossed plenty of tastemaker spotlights. His latest release is the psychedelic-rock-pop crossover ‘Class’, which he shares is “a lyric-driven reflection of the impact class has on society.”
Bringing on a star-studded cast of collaborators and musicians who span from Billie Eilish to French Montana to Liam Gallagher, Galloni opens the track with a blend of stabbing synths and ancient-sounding strings.
As his vocals take their place at the centre, driven drums and distorted guitars roar beneath him, his performance warping amongst their noise. The lyrics are gritty and unapologetic in their take on the world of class’ influence.
It comes to a head at the end with a screaming solo that descends into a mind-bending final moment filled with inhuman vocals and growing roughness in the arrangement.
