To celebrate her single ‘7 rings’ climbing to number one in the US charts, Ariana Grande tattooed her hand with the Chinese characters “七輪.”
In Chinese, the ink roughly translates to “7 rounds” or “7 wheels,” – but eagle-eyed Twitter users were quick to point out that the Japanese Kanji translation is “shichirin”… or a “small barbeque grill”.

Twitter users called out the singer for being ignorant, culturally appropriating the language and “being low key dumb af” for not checking the translation.

Not one to take criticism lying down – especially when it comes from Twitter – Grande responded to users by admitting that she had opted to leave a number of the characters in the translation out, because “it hurt like fuck” and she “wouldn’t have lasted another symbol.”
She did, however, delete the initial Instagram post debuting the ink and following.
But Ari made it clear that she wasn’t too embarrassed about the mishap, writing that she is a “huge fan of tiny bbq grills”.
Despite only being released this month, it’s not the first time that ‘7 rings’ has got the singer into hot water.
Last week, three artists (Soulja Boy, 2 Chainz, and Princess Nokia) accused Grande of plagiarising their lyrics and flow for her hit single.
Next month (8th February) Grande will drop thank u, next, the singer’s highly-anticipated fifth studio album – and her second full-length release in just six months.
