Beyoncé has announced plans to help those affected by the devastating Hurricane Harvey in Houston and southeastern Texas.
The Houston native issued a statement to the Houston Chronicle saying: “My heart goes out to my hometown, Houston, and I remain in constant prayer for those affected and for the rescuers who have been so brave and determined to do so much to help. “I am working closely with my team at BeyGOOD as well as my pastor (Rudy Rasmus at St. John’s in downtown Houston) to implement a plan to help as many as we can.”
Since Friday, Hurricane Harvey has caused flooding and destroyed homes on a catastrophic scale. Countless members of the community have been stranded and highways submerged by water. According to The New York Times, at least 10 people have died with many more left in need of help. BeyGOOD, Beyoncé’s philanthropic organisation, works with global charities to provide necessities such as food, housing, and medical help to those in need.
Following the disaster, with emergency teams overwhelmed and tens of thousands displaced in shelters, many have encouraged donations for the cause. Kevin Hart has since donated $25,000 to the Red Cross urging other celebrities to make similar contributions and Drake has announced his work with local relief groups via Instagram.
FEMA Administrator Brock Long has said that Texas will most likely require “one of the largest recovery housing efforts the nation has ever seen” following Harvey’s destruction. To help those in need there is a list of Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts here.
