Emerging Finnish artist Conchis has unveiled her latest single, “Cray Cray,” a cinematic electro-pop track that delves into the complexity of life’s choices and the rawness of human emotion. The song is a deeply personal and introspective piece from her upcoming debut album, *Chapters*, set to release on October 25, 2024, via Kieku Records.
Known for her unique blend of electronic, pop, and experimental music infused with cinematic soundscapes, Conchis delivers “Cray Cray” as a powerful exploration of the decisions we make and their profound impact on our lives. The track confronts challenges specific to her experiences, such as the self-imposed creative boundaries artists often face, the dilemma of whether to have children, and the complexities of living with a chronic illness. Through its intricate composition and heartfelt lyrics, “Cray Cray” captures the essence of these personal struggles and triumphs.
The creation of, Chapters, was significantly shaped by Conchis’ battle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a condition that introduced unique constraints during the recording process. One notable adaptation was limiting herself to only five vocal takes per song, a restriction that, rather than hindering the album, has imbued it with a raw and vulnerable quality. This approach reflects Conchis’ journey through illness and her determination to express herself authentically despite physical limitations.
Growing up in the serene Finnish archipelago, Conchis’ love for music blossomed early. In the isolated countryside, she cultivated her creativity and developed a rich, imaginative inner world. She began singing before she could talk, started playing the violin at seven, joined a choir a few years later, and by fifteen, was writing her own songs on the guitar. These formative experiences have profoundly influenced her musical style, which combines a deep emotional resonance with a broad, experimental approach.
Conchis draws inspiration from diverse sources, including the enigmatic novel The Magus by John Fowles. Named after a character from the book, she finds parallels between its suspenseful narrative and the symbolism of the tarot card, The Magician. These influences permeate, Chapters, which sample elemental sounds like earth, water, air, and fire, and explore themes of light and dark, beauty and roughness.
With, Chapters, due out in October, Conchis is set to release more singles in the lead-up to the album launch, offering listeners further glimpses into her evocative and introspective world. “Cray Cray” is now available on all major streaming platforms, inviting audiences to join Conchis on her journey through the intricate tapestry of human choices and emotions.
