Jazz pioneer and renowned vocalist Jon Hendricks has died aged 96.
The cause of the musician’s death is still yet to be revealed but the New York Times reports that the artist passed away in a Manhatten hospital yesterday (22nd November).
Born John Carl Hendricks in 1921, he became famous in the 1950s as a singer, songwriter and musician who was one part of the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. The group went on to release seven pioneering albums throughout their musical career.
Lambert, Hendricks & Ross brought a new singing technique to the genre using their voices to mirror improvised instrumental solos. This resulted in the impulsive and loose style of their music which came to be known as vocalese.
Ross was replaced by Yolande Bavan after leaving the vocal group in 1962. The trio finally parted ways altogether in 1964 leaving Hendricks to focus on his solo career.
