James Holden has shared a new track, ‘Pass Through The Fire’, and announced a new record with his newly formed band The Animal Spirits.
The new album, The Animal Spirits, follows Holden’s 2013 offering, The Inheritors, and sees the group merging a “custom-made modular synthesizer system“. The new song was inspired by the frontman’s 2014 trip to Morocco to work with Gnawa star Maalem Mahmoud Guinia. Listen to the beautifully chaotic ‘Pass Through The Fire‘ below.
Comprised of long time collaborators, Marcus Hamblett, Liza Bec and Lascelle Gordon, as well as Tom Page and Etienne Jaumet, The Animal Spirits will be released 3rd November via Holden’s label Border Community.
The new LP reportedly explores Holden’s newfound love of Morocco’s Gnawa trance tradition. A press release on the record states it focuses on “repackaging the brash tones of pure trance into the accommodating spiritual jazz band format” and can be construed “as a kind of coming to terms with Holden’s early trance past.”
