Laura Mvula has revealed how a recent ordeal involving US airport customs officials left her in “beautiful/ugly brokenness”.
Writing on Instagram, the singer detailed flying to Miami International Airport ahead of a 2017 tour, which kicks off in the city, and being detained by officials for four hours.
She wrote: “I hope you can see my beautiful/ugly brokenness… I was held at customs in Miami for four hours, in the end it was all down to a mistake made by an inspector. I was spoken to like I was a genuine criminal, even mocked by an officer at one point… It occurred to me what trauma it must be for victims of really serious bullying by officials and more seriously what it must be to endure police brutality.”
