A petition for Maroon 5 to cover Spongebob SquarePants ‘Sweet Victory’ at their forthcoming Super Bowl Halftime show has garnered over one million signatures.
The infamous ‘Band Geeks’ episode of the nautical Nickelodeon cartoon aired back in the early 2000s – you might remember it as the episode where Patrick asks if mayonnaise is an instrument, and SpongeBob conducts a rousing performance of an epic rock anthem called ‘Sweet Victory’, with the residents of Bikini Bottom as his band.
The passing of one of Spongebob’s creators has been a driving inspiration behind the petition: “As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently,” the page reads. “As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show.”
Maroon 5 are yet to make an official response to the proposition, but they did incorporate the loveable sponge into their Halftime Show promo video which was released a few weeks ago.
