Stormzy says he has been stabbed three times, but he didn’t realize the severity of the attacks as they were normalized in his hometown.
In an interview with the Sunday Times about his upbringing, the 25-year-old rapper explained that he had been stabbed three times – once to the head – but the reality of the events didn’t sink in until years after.
The grime artist said he did not speak about the traumatic attacks, which occurred when he was growing up in Thornton Heath, South London, as he thought they were “normal”.
Explaining the moment the severity hit home, Stormzy said: “It was in Tipton. We’d gone there to do the work of the people we were to manage, like welders and in the room were 17 white kids – one day we had our hard hats off. I had a scar on my head and someone goes ‘what happened?’, I said ‘Oh, I got stabbed’.
“They had faces of horror – and that’s when it dawned on me. Where I come from is mad. Of course it’s shocking I’ve been stabbed. Of course it shouldn’t be normal.”
Last year, Stormzy’s friend Bugz was killed in a knife attack in Thornton Heathe.
Bugz, aka Bjorn Brown, was just 23-years-old when two men stabbed him to death.
