French-British composer Jean-Loup Pinson, a leading talent in London’s music scene, returns with a bold and innovative EP titled, A Moment of Deathlessness. This new release marries poetry, music, and contemporary voices in a distinctive blend that transcends genre, offering listeners a sonic exploration of themes inspired by iconic American poet Emily Dickinson.
A Moment of Deathlessness, showcases Pinson’s unique compositional style, combining choral music, spoken word, rap, and electronic elements to create a soundscape unlike anything else in contemporary music. At the heart of this work is Dickinson’s timeless poetry, brought to life through the voices of The Carice Singers, one of the UK’s premier chamber choirs. Pinson’s collaborations with London-based hip-hop poets and artists Armanious and Tanaka Fuego add a modern urban layer, providing a refreshing counterpoint to Dickinson’s reflections on truth, desire, and mortality. This interplay between classical and contemporary voices forges a powerful link across two centuries, bridging disparate artistic traditions both lyrically and sonically.
“Emily Dickinson’s poetry speaks to universal themes of existence, and I wanted to explore those ideas from contrasting angles,” says Pinson. “The collaboration between a classical choir and contemporary hip-hop artists seemed like a compelling way to examine the enduring relevance of her work.”
This release marks a high point in Pinson’s already remarkable career. With experience in scoring for film, television, theatre, and video games, his recent credits include the Ophir-nominated feature The Art of Waiting, the Berlinale-selected documentary Speer Goes to Hollywood, and the critically acclaimed dance production Comrades in the Dark. Pinson has also collaborated with award-winning composer Frank Ilfman, lending his talents to major film scores like Gunpowder Milkshake and Ghost Stories. His accomplishments reflect both his technical skill and creative vision, underscored by his First-Class Honours degree from the London College of Contemporary Music and his membership in BAFTA Connect since 2022.
