Indie-pop darlings The fin. return with their latest single, “Echoes”, a shimmering, introspective track that marks another milestone in their sonic journey. Released just three months after celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album Days With Uncertainty, this new offering captures the signature dreamy soundscapes that have earned them a devoted following worldwide.
Formed in 2012 by Yuto Uchino (vocals, guitar, synth) and Kaoru Nakazawa (bass, synth), The fin. have carved out a unique niche in the indie and psychedelic pop landscape. Uchino, the band’s creative force, takes the reins of songwriting, recording, mixing, and production, crafting a lush and immersive musical world. His velvety vocals and the duo’s penchant for blending mellow indie pop with elements of soul, funk, and jazz create a sound that is both serene and otherworldly.
“Echoes” opens with ambient recordings of insects and birdsong, evoking a tranquil, pastoral setting. The song unfolds into a dreamy soundscape, weaving Uchino’s melting vocals with shimmering synths. As it progresses, laid-back percussion evolves into a hypnotic, psychedelic groove, encapsulating the serene beauty of Uchino’s childhood home. The lyrics delve into themes of identity and nostalgia, offering listeners a meditative retreat to their own inner sanctuary.
Reflecting on the track, Uchino shares, “‘Echoes’ is a journey into the quiet heart of my hometown. A hill under endless stars, where the air feels alive with clarity and memory. This place became a mirror for my soul, reflecting the person I used to be and guiding me toward the simplest, purest version of myself. The song weaves through questions of identity and the deep pull of nostalgia, inviting you to explore your own echoes of the past. I hope it resonates something within you.”
The release of “Echoes” is just one chapter in what promises to be an exciting year for The fin. In addition to their new single, the band is commemorating their 10-year anniversary with special releases. On April 12, 2025, for Record Store Day, they will unveil a 7-inch vinyl of “Night Time (Bad Milk Remix)”. In May, they will drop two 7-inch records featuring “Towards the Sun” and “Alone in the Sky”, along with two new tracks, ahead of a full album set to arrive later in the year.
Since their debut, The fin. have left an indelible mark on the global music scene. With performances across the UK, US, Europe, and Asia, and appearances at renowned festivals like SXSW, Fuji Rock, Summer Sonic, and The Great Escape, the duo have captivated audiences far and wide. Over the years, they’ve shared the stage with esteemed acts like Phoenix, The Last Shadow Puppets, MEW, and Wild Nothing.
