The Big Mackoofy are back in 2025 with one of their strongest offerings ever-“Slave New World” is their latest single and features the imaginative production and arrangement of Jeff Lucas, the Lyrical and melodic powers of Tony Joseph, within which Eddie Blindell weaves teasing guitar riffs. The track has all the hallmarks of the bands previous releases that bridge Dub, Funk and Psychedelia. As the world looks an increasingly scary place “Slave New World” is a warning of where we are heading unless we wake up.
For those new to the Big Mackoofy -they are heavily influenced by 70’s African Psychedelia, think Bowie meets Prince to write a Tarantino soundtrack. Or The Clash, The Redskins and the Coup joining forces to make an album. Often regarded as stoner music-so if music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue..or according to Plato, or as George Clinton said “Free you’re mind and the ass will follow.”
Somewhere in the universe there is a night club – and in that night club they play the 13th Floor Elevators, Burning Spear, Curtis Mayfield, Fela Kuti and Ginger Baker, Jimi Hendrix, 60’s Soul, The Coup, Jorge Ben playing Africa Brasilia, Lee Scratch Perry, The Redskins, Old Skool Hip Hop, Sly and the Family Stone, Billy Cobham, Toots and the Maytals, Augustus Pablo, The Meters, CSNY and the Clash. And if you spent a weekend in that club and formed a band they would sound like the Big Mackoofy.
The latest release is the 3rd in a trilogy of singles recorded at their latest session and it follows on from their previous six albums, the first released in 2017. The release of the album “if you fight you wont always win but if you don’t fight you will always lose” brought them wider acclaim across the US and Europe. The Big Mackoofy are keeping counter culture music alive, the 21st century upsetters.
